1/13/00 - David Fincher is one of my favorite up and coming directors. With the exception of Alien³ I think every film is extremely brilliant.
Se7en is where I became a fan of his. This along with Silence of the Lambs, are hands down the two best serial killer movies ever. Depending on my mood, I often think Se7en is the better film. For once the killer is given a believable and genius motive. At times the tension in this film is almost unbearable. Good performances all around, especially Kevin Spacey. This film sets up what Fincher does best, dark films with a twist. The Game, I wish I could go back and see this without remembering a thing. This movie took me on maybe the best ride of any film I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, run out and rent it and skip the rest of this paragraph. Although your damn sure it's all just a game, the film takes so many turns, your never quite sure what is going on. That is why I loved it, because it wasn't predictable, I didn't know how it was going to end. And although I felt the ending was a bit of a cop-out, I can't really think of a better way to end it.
Fincher has a magic touch with the camera. His films are about dark subjects, but are photographed beautifully, it's a wonderful conflict. He also gets great performances out of his actors, he's gotten two out of Brad Pitt. Whatever Fincher makes next (probably The Panic Room), I'll be there opening day
