12/20/99 -Paul Thomas
Anderson just came out of nowhere for me. I heard about
this movie Boogie Nights, something about the porn
industry, starring Marky Mark. And I heard it was good?!
Being the huge movie fan I am, I decided to check it out.
I loved it. At first just the story and the characters
pulled me in. After getting it on Dvd and checking it out
a few more times. I realize this just might be one of my
all time favorite films. The way everything is put together
is so perfect. The way he lights the scenes, and moves the
camera, is very reminicant of Scorsese.
The performances he gets out of his actors is amazing. The music choices
are so perfect. This is the guy that Tarintino set out to
be, but has messed up since really doing nothing since
Pulp Fiction, yes I know about Jackie Brown.
I then checked out Hard Eight, Paul's first film. It is a decent little film, with some good performances. But you can tell he was still learning how to make films.
11/9/00 - I saw Magnolia the day it opened, I absolutely loved it. I still think Boogie Nights is a more enjoyable film, but technically it shows a lot of growth in a short amount of time. I saw it twice in the theater, and I've owned it on DVD for more than a month, but I haven't got around to watching it again. Once I do, I'll post a more in depth review.
