You can't dedicate a site to directors and not mention Spielberg. The man is probably the best director working today, possibly ever. Three of his films would be in my top ten list, those being Raiders, Jaws, and Close Encounters. Raiders being my favorite film for a long time, and I would probably now consider it #2. His films have by far made more money than any other director.

The man just creates great films, no matter what genre it is. That's the cool thing about him, he tackles all genres, and is great at all of them.

Action: The Indiana Jones Trilogy, the 2nd greatest set of B-films ever, next to Star Wars. Just so much fun to watch, amazing action sequences, Indiana may just be the coolest movie hero ever. Saving Private Ryan, an incredibly moving war film, with some heart wrenching scenes, but at its core it's an action film. Seven men behind enemy lines, intermittent gun fights, all culminating in a Wild Bunch type ending.

Horror: Jaws, maybe the best horror film ever made. Steven builds the suspense so well in this film. It works so well, because we hardly ever see the shark. The film is better for it, that thing looks horrible. Jurassic Park, a really fun film, with some outstanding effects. Too bad it's made for the whole family, I'd really love to see an R rated version. More Jaws like. It's vastly inferior sequel Lost World, had some cool sequences, but ultimately is a loser because of stupid stuff, like gymnastic 12 year olds, and the T-Rex ending up in San Diego. Duel, basically Jaws with a truck, a cool little film. Poltergeist, although not officially directed by Steven. You can tell it's his movie. Very scarey, and it still stands up today.

Sci-Fi: Close Encounters, this often moves into my favorite film position, usually right after I watch it. A great character study of someone who actually meets aliens. He leaves everything behind, to find out the greater truth. E.T., the kids version of Close Encounters. A very fun film, heartbreaking if your under 11, but really to kiddie to be one of his best films.

Drama: Schindler's List, his best drama film, a very important film. It's a beautiful film, about one of the ugliest moments in human history. Empire of the Sun, a childs view of WWII. A film that is often not mentioned with Steven's name. Quite a good film. With two films Steven looks at another horrible event in human history, slavery. Amistad is a story about bringing the slaves over. The Color Purple is a story of a slaves life once they're here. Both are pretty good.

The rest of his films, I don't really feel I need to mention. None are really terrible, but none are really terribly good.

Steven is currently working on A.I. a pet project of the late Stanley Kubrick. It sounds like a big budget Pinocchio, kind of boring, but I'm sure he can do something good with it. I really wish he was doing Minority Report next. Based on a Phillip K. Dick story, it would have been a much more hard-core sci-fi film. Something he hasn't done in a while. Whatever films he decides to do in the future, I'll be there. I can guarantee I won't be bored.

12/7/1: The Minority Report teaser came online today. It looks pretty interesting. Looks like it will be very visually impressive.
