With the opening shot of a very bad CGI'd ocean and boat, I
knew what I was in for the rest of the film. I really just don't
understand how the computer graphics are so bad, 6 years ago and on a
smaller budget Jurassic Park had much more convincing "monsters." I would
think making a shark would be pretty easy with today's technology, seeing
how they are very smooth, and swim with an easy motion, which I would
think would be easier to animate than a running dinosaur.
Also coming with this film, are those very annoying plot holes, of
characters changing smartness and size to go with the scene. One minute
the sharks are big enough to eat a man whole, the next their small enough
to fit through doors barely large enough for a man. The sharks are also
smart enough to know the layout of the entire operation, but then stupid
enough to think a fire extinguisher with a life jacket is a man.
Then there are the human characters who are much more boring than the
sharks. Your rooting for the characters to get eaten, to make a
successful
horror film, you must first like the characters. They are all the
standard cliche' characters for a film of this type. Samuel L. Jackson is
the angry CEO, who's only thoughts are to keep his stockholders happy, but
he has a dirty secret that he's been through a similar situation before.
Saffron Burrows is the determined scientist, who wants to cure a disease
because her dad had it. But she also serves the purpose of showing
some T&A, in a laughingly bad reason she needs to take off her wet-suit
leaving her in bra and panties. Thomas Jane is the shark wrangler, who has
the law breaking past. LL Cool J is the cook, but is also a bible
thumping alcoholic. He is definitely the most annoying character, as he
is constantly talking to himself or his parrot, and has the worst one
liner in recent history. "You killed my bird!" The rest are just
the basic scientist/maintenance crew, who's only purpose is to get eaten.
Oh, I almost forgot the last character that always shows up in these
films, the hurricane, we really need a reason for the difficulties that
lead to the sharks getting control.
With all these bad things going for it, the film still manages to be
entertaining. In that, it's so bad it's good way. The animatronic
sharks are convincing enough to be scary in some scenes. The explosions,
rushing water, and people getting eaten are fun. There are a couple of
good surprise deaths, that make you jump. It's fun to watch these
characters get in deeper trouble with each move they make.
The film is basically a rip-off of Alien and Jurassic Park, but not nearly
in their league. I would only recommend to those who are serious action
or horror fans, and get off on the sick pleasure of watching people die in
horrible ways. Well, that was the only reason I enjoyed it.
