Keeping the Faith

4/10/00: It seems like it was about time somebody made a movie about one of the oldest jokes in the book. You know, the one about the Priest and the Rabbi. Well in this joke they both fall in love with the same woman. What's going to happen, how funny is the punch-line going to be?

First time director and acting "God" Edward Norton takes a crack at telling us a good joke. He succeeds for the most part. Edward Norton who I, along with most people, have loved since Primal Fear, and only have gained more respect for him with movies like American History X and Fight Club, is one of the best actors working today. His role as Father Brian Finn, is really his first step into a comedic character. Surprise, surprise, he's really quite funny, he performs some great physical comedy moments throughout the film. Ben Stiller is Rabbi Jake Schram, he's been funny since the Ben Stiller Show, and really showed this to the world in There's Something About Mary. Jenna Elfman, is Anna Reily the girl they both fall for. Jenna steps away from her Dharma role, not that big of a step, she's still the cute, out-going girl that everybody loves, just not as eccentric. Also watch for Jenna's husband Bodhi, in a funny cameo as the sex crazed office worker.

These three go way back, they've been best friends since they were kids. When Anna left, it only made Brian and Jake closer. They've decided to devote their lives to their religions, and both are very happy with it. There are a few nice scenes where we see how much they enjoy their faiths, and how they are both trying to make a difference for the people who follow them. It seems the only problem is that Jake can't keep the Jewish mothers from trying to set him up with their daughters. This is when Anna comes back into town, the friendship instantly resumes for the three. However it's not to long before things get complicated. Jake and Brian both fall in love with Anna, Jake has a problem with it because she's not Jewish, Brian isn't supposed to lust after women at all, and nobody wants to hurt the friendship.

It's not a great film, and it really has nothing new to offer in the realm of romantic comedies. But it is really enjoyable because of the three leads. While not really outstanding performances from any of them, they are all just so damn likeable. I can see this leading Elfman into the land of Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts. The film is a decent first outing for director Norton. I'm sure he'll try something a little more challenging for his sophomore film.
