I've been looking forward to this film, mostly because of the cast
involved. All of who I've enjoyed in other movies in the past. Let's run
through the line up. Ben Stiller is Mr. Furious, who is very funny, his
power is that he gets so infuriated that he can't control himself.
William Macy is The Shoveler, well cause he's handy with a shovel. Hank
Azaria is Blue Raja, a master of cutlery, forks mostly, he speaks with a
phony English accent.
This is the original trio, they are desperate to
break onto the superhero scene of Champion City, which is a mix of
Gotham City and the Los Angeles of Blade Runner. The only problem is the
city already has a hero, Capitan Amazing played well enough by Greg
Kinnear, who has the ultimate advantage of actually having superpowers.
But is getting lazy because he has vanquished all the super-villains, and
is now more concerned about his endorsement deals.
Super-villain Casanova Frankenstein, who has a much cooler name than his
character acts, returns to the city and manages to capture Capitan
Amazing. Geoffrey Rush is just not over the top enough, for a role and a
movie that is just begging for it.
It is then up to the trio to save
Amazing and the city. They need the help of some more super-heroes to
get the job done. Invisible Boy joins the team, he represents the kid in
all of us, that wanted to be a superhero. The Spleen played by Paul
Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman, has control of some nasty flatulence that will
knock people flat. Somehow it stays funny, I thought I'd get sick of
the fart jokes. Janeane Garofalo is the Bowler, who's father's skull is
embedded in her bowling ball, it is the most dangerous weapon the team
has. Lastly The Sphinx joins, he is the leader the team has been needing,
although Mr. Furious would disagree. He has very mysterious powers, and
speaks in a cliche, tag-line, football coach way. The team is now
complete, but are in need of some firepower, they enlist the help of
Tom Waits, the "mad" scientist who makes non-lethal weapons.
This is not your typical superhero film. It has the cool sets and
costumes of a Batman film, but is obviously different because our guys
don't really have any superpowers. They fight more for their love of
being the hero, it reminded me much of the cartoon series the Tick.
I don't know if most people will get this film. It has a cool mix of
being a spoof, but also creating an identity of it's own. If successful
it will most definitely be followed by sequels. I highly recommend it on
the basis of being very funny, while also having a good adventure
